Dr.Tiruppamburam s.Shanmugasundaram

                      DR.TIRUPPAMBURAM S.SHANMUGASUNDARAM-a tribute

      DR.TIRUPPAMBURAM S.SHANMUGASUNDARAM comes from the lineage of Amirtha kavi Kuppaiyah Pillai, but for whom we would not have got Muttutandavar’s songs. He was born on 15.07.1937 to the famous Nagasvara Vidvan Tiruppamburam.N.Somasundaram and Pattammal. He learnt vocal music from his father, though the Tiruppamburam school is famous for playing Nagasvaram and flute (Tiruppamburam Svamithana pillai was famous for his excellence in playing the flute}. Dr.Shanmugasundaram learnt the kritis of Muttusvami Dikshitar from Natarajasundaram Pillai. He learnt Tevaram and other Tamil compositions while he studied at the Annamalai University.

     He began his career, when he joined the Government Music College Adyar, as a lecturer. He worked in the same college as Principal for 13 years. He was instrumental in starting the music colleges at Madurai and Coimbatore. He was one of the forces who worked behind the starting of the district music schools in 17 districts. From 1998 he worked as the Director of the music school attached to Tamil isai Sangam, Chennai. He continued in this position till his death, 18.05.2010.

     During his tenure, he chaired the pan research conferences, in which this author also took active part. The equivalent ragas for 42 pans were agreed upon by the eminent personalities of Sangam during his tenure, These 42 Pans are apart from the 23 pans listed in the Tevaram and find a place in the book Pancha Marabu.

     Thus Tiruppaburam Shanmugasundaram has done yeomen service to the cause of Tamil music.
